No, THAT doesn't make it bad . .
It was bad though, let us not kid ourselves here.
We only enjoyed it because we were kids then.
And kids are stupid like that.

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

But it was what came on in that time block when I was getting ready for school. Before that, it was Beast Wars.

So, yesterday was grandfather's funeral. Somebody sounded the Horn of the Clan, and our family gathered from across the lands. I assume that's how it works for most families? Anyway, family had gathered from around Australia and we held the funeral at the local football club (local games, not the big AFL thing). Apparently the club knew him fairly well and played their final game of the season with black armbands in his memory.
It was a nice funeral - around a hundred people as friends were invited too, and even though he was a grumpy old bastard, he worked as a plumber for a long time so knew a lot of people and was a very straight-forward man who told it like it was, so he actually did make a fair number of friends in the community.
"He had a favourite word - I can see a lot of you smiling in the audience, you know what that word is. For those who don't know.... fuck it, I'll tell you later." (Hint: the word was in that last sentence!)
Us grandkids were the pallbearers.

No, I said pallbearers, not Paul Bearer,
And resting on the coffin was a framed picture of the true love of his life, Cozzie - the dog he owned until a few years ago, who saw him through the death of his second wife (car accident). When we all placed roses on the coffin, one of my uncles placed a cigarette there instead, as something he'd appreciate.
It wasn't a celebration as such, but it wasn't a gloomy thing. We said goodbye, remembered him as he was in life, and used the situation to catch up and all chat. Then we pretty much took over one of the local pubs for dinner, annexing a large part of the dining area.
It went well, and now I can move on. I kind of want to do more game design stuff now that this is over, but I'm not sure there's anything left that needs designing.

Glad to hear you got some closure, Koumei, and it sounds like your family did as a whole.

A friend of mine is going through a very nasty divorce. He basically is flatly refusing to negotiate anything and hasn't allowed her to speak or see her son for months. (Basically, he won't let her see him without a custody agreement, and he won't even look at something unless a lawyer wrote it). So far, the only divorce lawyer that has responded to her inquiries wanted $1,500 up front (which might be a deal because I literally don't know how much legal services cost other than "a lot").
She could file for a contested divorce, but his parents are millionaires and carry around more than $1,500 as pocket change. So she would probably take a bath on this even though he's an abusive, shiftless sack of crap that expects the world to take care of him.
Not looking for advice so much as I find myself being oddly grateful to my ex. Despite any issues we had, she at least saw that it wasn't productive for either of us to drag things out and wanted to end it as quickly as legally possible.

My fathers second divorce was $2500 all in. Full disclosure: that was 10 years ago, it was uncontested, and his wife was in prison in part as an accessory to his attempted murder.Count Arioch the 28th wrote:A friend of mine is going through a very nasty divorce. Game On,

To the extent you weren't asking for advise, you can ignore this, but I'm going to give it anyway.
1) States vary, but that sounds eminently reasonable for a retainer for a New Jersey Divorce.
2) Get a lawyer if your voice is contested.
3) If they other party has lots of money, make clear that you are willing to settle the money amounts for some reasonably figure that your lawyer knows will get them paid, don't talk about how you definitely need a trial. But make sure you get a parenting plan that works well.

I love comics and webcomics, but I still struggle to find my voice whenever I attempt one. Still, today's effort: http://www.the-unpublishable.com/2015/0 ... comic.html
Stylistic neogi and clam-person, I can dig it. The last panel certainly has a Van Gogh like quality to it, showing what seems to be the clam-person either drunk or poisoned from the rum they just bought; though I suppose he could've been shanked instead and just dropped it.Shrapnel wrote:I'm... having a hard time telling what's going on in the last panel. Got me a new car. It's literally the nicest car I've ever owned (although not the most expensive, oddly enough). I'm pretty thrilled, had a mechanic look at it and he said it could last another 200-300k miles if I keep up on the maintenance. Very cool.

I got this in my e-mail, from a guy I sat next to in college classes. We had some of the same literary interests--we both read HP Lovecraft--but couldn't have been more different in political views or background or general attitude towards life. I was 20 or so, he was 17 and had been homeschooled by very conservative parents when he wasn't in a local religious school, started college early, professed a lot of right-wing political beliefs. I hung out with him to show him around campus, show him a bit of kindness, got him to read Watchmen because I thought he'd dig it (he did), generally advocated a way of looking at things that came down to "Just because it's different doesn't mean it's wrong" "folks screw up sometimes, doesn't mean they're idiots or that they're against you" and similar bits of benevolence I try to live by myself.
Now skip forward several years, when I'm 28. I get this e-mail today. I forgot he even had my e-mail.

Well huh.I never told you how much it meant to me that you reached out to me when I was a 17 year old freshman. Even though I was maladjusted to the world around me, always pissed off, and whatnot, you never gave up on me. I owe you a lot. I should have told you that earlier, but I have a hard time communicating things like that. I mean this literally when I say that I probably wouldn't have graduated nor gotten this job had you not steered me in the right direction during my first two or three semesters. Thanks dude.

So, I went to the first competition night of Ignite Durham 2015 like I mentioned previously. There were some seriously talented teams in that competition, let me tell you. Definitely gained a lot from the experience.
In any case, my presentation started fine, but I choked and my mind went blank about 1/3 of the way through. Did get some nice reactions in the crowd about tabletop RPGs, though. The walk back to the chair was mortifying, but the shame passed quickly enough.
While I did miss out on possibly winning the $25,000 I definitely don't think entering was a waste. I learned a lot about how this sort of thing works, my strengths, and my weaknesses. I'll enter again next year and I plan to make it to at least round 2.
Funniest part was after it ended and everyone was chatting an old lady in a huge hat told me she liked what I was talking about. Says she's been an RPG fan for a long time, got back into it with the original Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior series. Got a possible business contact, so that was cool.
Now, if i can only get enough funds to get my first product release finished...
